ANNATTO Avoid annatto until we learn more about it. Achiote is the common name for Bixin seed that grows inside the fruit of the Bixa orellana tree. Yellow cheeses contain annatto (achiote) coloring. Achiote seeds give off a slightly floral or peppermint scent. Processed cheeses, butter and margarine, cakes, cookies, snacks and cereals are all commonly colored with achiote. Caution annatto might affect blood sugar levels. This has raised some concern that it might interfere with blood sugar control in non diabetics, during and after surgery. Stop using annatto at least 2 weeks before any scheduled surgery. It is being studied for its anti-tumor effect.
