GALACTITOL (dulcitol) is a sugar alcohol, the reduction product of galactose. Galactose is found in milk and all foods that contain milk. In people with galactokinase deficiency, a form of galactosemia, excess dulcitol forms in the lens of the eye leading to cataracts. Avoid galactitol. However, it seems unlikely that senile cataract is a result of the accumulation of galactitol in the eye lens.
