HYDROGENATED STARCH HYDROLYSATE (HSH) are to be avoided. Mixtures of alcohols such as sorbitol, maltitol, and other sugar alcohols are important food ingredients because of their sweetness, low carcinogenic potential, and useful functional properties; however they are based on alcohol which is detrimental for PLD liver. Avoid hydrogenated starch hydrolysate (HSH) as this is produced from starch – most often corn starch, but also potato starch or wheat starch, all which are to be avoided.
